PROTECMED endorses European project LIFE + RELEACH
Kick-off of theLIFE + RELEACH research project together with CTM, TYPSA, Catalan Agency of waste and consortium of the Bages
The current leachate management processes consume a lot of energy and chemical reagents, causing a high environmental and economic impact. This RELEACH project aims, through a new scheme of treatment, to reduce the consumption of energy and reactives, minimising the environmental and economic impact associated with the treatment of leachate and, finally, in waste management
One of the most innovative goals of the project is the use of reverse osmosis membranes from desalination plants, which have already reached the end of its useful life . Through a process of regeneration, these membranes are used for the treatment of leachate. In this way, a waste is reused, otherwise would have to be managed in landfills.
In the course of this project, which will have a duration of 4 years, it will be designed and built a pilot plant which will be operated in two controlled waste landfills located in Catalonia. The project also aims to promote social awareness of the impact on the environment of the generation and management of waste through social participation with stakeholders and promote the acceptance of the developed technology and its extrapolation to other places.
